I Get More Done When I Have Nothing to Do

The busiest leaders get the least done. Sons who clear their agenda and co-labor with Father from the Council release what no self-effort can produce.

This is actually one of the most productive discoveries a business leader can make — and it comes from this paradox: Less is More! Less of me and more of Him… and more from your staff.

Let me explain what I mean.

 

The problem with a full agenda

Most leaders I know — me included — operate with a crowded interior. Not just a busy calendar, but a cluttered identity, checkered past, and a confusing purpose to go with accumulated perceptions of who we are, an identity we need to protect, what we still need to prove, our big-hairy-audacious goals, and what we think God expects from us.

When the agenda is that full, there is no room for Father to speak or contribute (Dunamis). The Council is technically open but practically inaccessible because every frequency is already occupied by my own voice narrating my own story at full volume.

Father put it plainly: When your identity is uncluttered from perceptions,

• your agenda free from the plans of men,
• your schedule open from your own busyness,
• and you are not nagging Me about past unanswered petitions —

then there is nothing blocking conversation and co-laboring. Then the Kingdom can come first. Then I can add all these things.

The things I was previously running after — striving for, working toward, anxious about — He adds when I stop running after them. That is not passive. That is the most strategically sophisticated posture a business leader can adopt.

 

The Accusation Worth Taking to the Courts

Here is the uncomfortable version of this truth: the full agenda, the ambitious vision, the well-branded purpose narrative — all of it can be a dressed-up version of all the things even the pagans run after, Mt 6:32. You have invented the will of God. You are running after all these things for your own sake and in your own name.

That landed hard. Because it is not describing people who ignore God. It is describing people who are sincerely engaged with God but have quietly placed their own identity, story, and brand at the center of the mission — and then asked Father to bless it and call it His.

The cross is where that accusation goes. Not to be examined intellectually — not self-flagellation dressed as repentance — but genuinely surrendered in the Courts of Heaven. Father, I agree with this accusation. The competition, the self-promotion, the running ahead of You — I take it to the cross.

What comes back from the cross is not a smaller agenda. It is a prophetically cleaner one, one that God and your staff will co-labor on. An agenda that came from the Council rather than from “me.”

 

Identity as the Boat Anchor

Paul was precise about this: I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me (Gal. 2:20).
And again: For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God (Col. 3:3).

Identity, in the Council framework, is not primarily something to be developed. It is first something to be erased — then redrawn on a whiteboard that Father can change. The son who holds his identity loosely enough that Father can update it is the one who can follow the Lamb wherever He goes. The son who has built his identity into a brand, a reputation, a personal mission statement, a five-year vision — that son has an anchor that limits his spiritual agility, his ability to follow the Lamb. He unwittingly limits Father’s ability to add all these things, Mt 6:33.

New Thought is ultimately identity worship — the self-constructed ego at the center of the universe, calling on God to complete the picture. Sonship is identity surrender — the daily offering of your Isaac on the altar so Father can return it, refined, in whatever form serves His purpose today.

“I get more done when I have nothing to do” is true precisely because the identity, the story, and the personal purpose narrative stop blocking the Spirit of Truth. When I am not protecting my brand, I can say what Father is saying. When I am not defending my vision, I can see what Father is doing. When I am not running after the outcomes I need, Father can add His power.

 

What This Looks Like in Practice

The practical discipline is not emptiness for its own sake. It is a specific sequence:

Go to the Council before you create. Creativity needs to be in the context of Kingdom purpose — not driven by human identity, intellect, or perceived need. The son or daughter who sits in the Council and asks “Father, what is on your heart?” comes back with living words that open doors no amount of self-generated strategy would have found.

Leave your identity, story, and purpose on the table. Don’t hold it, protect it, defend it, or worship it. Let it be your continual offering. Put your trust in God, your faith in God, your identity in Christ, your life in Christ — and make room for Father’s Dunamis to show up in the gap.

Communicate in living words from the Council. A leader who walks into the room carrying his own agenda communicates — subtly but unmistakably — that he only sees himself. His staff can smell the dead works, the religious ambition, the self-will. But a leader who walks in with what Father said this morning is carrying a fragrance. His team starts to lean in. They give themselves permission to innovate, to initiate, to bring their own hearts into the work. The culture grows. So does cash flow.

 

The Paradox That Actually Works

Paul said it without apology: “My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9).
And: “We have this treasure in jars of clay, so that the extraordinary greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves” (2 Cor. 4:7).

The jar of clay is not the obstacle. The jar of clay insisting it is the treasure — that is the obstacle.

Sons who have learned to be content not to invent dead works, who have made room for Father’s power and His living words as the first priority — those sons discover that the agenda Father gives them is both lighter and more productive than anything they built themselves.

They get more done. Not because they work harder, but because Father is adding things. Not because they have better strategy, but because the strategy came from Wisdom in the Council. Not because they hustle more effectively, but because they are co-laboring with the One who holds the outcome.

I get more done when I have nothing to do — because when I have nothing to do, Father has everything to say. And what He says produces more than everything I was doing before He said it. It’s the difference between what I can do and what Father and I can do together — night and day!

 

The genius of Sonship is learning how to release what Father can do when we co-labor with His Agenda and Purpose. That is not a passive posture — it is the most aggressive business strategy available because the One you are co-laboring with holds every outcome, every door, and every resource the mission requires.

The frosting is that your staff will resonate and engage with the same prophetic purpose that causes Father to engage because they love co-laboring with Father’s purpose too. Your job is nailing and communicating that Kingdom Purpose from the Council.

And what Father can do — through sons who have learned to hold their own agenda loosely and follow the Lamb — is the Isaiah 61 Reformation: the restoration of Heaven’s culture for every Person, Business, City, and Nation, one Council conversation, one living word, one co-labored initiative at a time. It’s a banquet, and Father is inviting you into the adventure of sonship.
