Victim Mentality vs. Sonship:

Breaking Free From a Culture of Blame

(Intro Video and Sharable PDF) Scroll social media long enough and you’ll find it: the steady drumbeat that says evil capitalists and corrupt politicians are conspiring to steal your happiness, and the only path forward is to demand what is owed you from your oppressors. It shows up constantly in DSA-themed politics right now — a whole worldview built on the premise that you are, first and foremost, a victim of someone else’s cruel agenda… and you should trust us to take care of you.

Social researchers who study identity politics call this Victim Mentality: once a group is cast as a victim class, it’s positioned to make claims against an “oppressor” class — claims that are never actually negotiated, just asserted. And here’s the part that concerns every son and daughter of the Kingdom: society keeps handing out real benefits for occupying victim status, which means people can be trained, incentivized, and eventually acclimated into a victim mentality as a political/social strategy (intentionally). It isn’t a fringe glitch in the system. It’s the system working as designed. Strip away the modern packaging and what’s underneath is old-fashioned Marxist class warfare — oppressor versus oppressed — repackaged as narrative belief systems and promulgated on social media for a generation raised on hashtags instead of manifestos.

Bottom line – I don’t want my own sonship ensnared with a victim mentality fabricated from my own story and sold to me from the media as deception. I’m not volunteering for that level of captivity.

 

Why This Is Antithetical to Sonship

Sons are never victims — even though they absolutely face trials, suffering, and setbacks they didn’t choose. That distinction matters enormously. A victim mentality doesn’t just describe hardship; it narrates a future. It writes a script where you are permanently acted upon, never truly free, always waiting for someone else’s malice to justify your circumstances. And that script costs you everything that actually belongs to you as a son: it misses:

• Father’s grace to overcome; everything he can add (Mt 6:33)
• misses the boundary lines that have already fallen in pleasant places (Ps 16:5),
• misses intercession in the Courts of Heaven (your role in Spiritual Warfare),
• and misses co-laboring with Father entirely (releasing what God can do).

Peter’s counsel about Jesus is the model here — when He was insulted, He didn’t retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats but entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly (1 Pet 2:23). That’s not passivity. That’s a man refusing to let suffering rewrite his identity and actively deploying everything Father can add.

Bitter Roots – A victim mentality passively nurses roots of bitterness and misses grace.

Heb 12:15 – See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God
and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

It worships what the enemy can do instead of what Father is doing. Each new abuse is a victim’s welcome justification for an oppressive circumstance that isn’t their fault (a root of bitterness that needs occasional reinforcement). And left unchecked, it produces exactly what you’d expect: susceptibility to every conspiracy theory, rumor, and hint of bad news, a tendency to spread fear, hatred, and unbelief, an inflated sense of the enemy’s power, and — ironically — faith for evil to prevail rather than faith for Reformation.

 

The Shift: From Victim to Volunteer

Here’s the good news Jesus brings as Redeemer of your story: He doesn’t just comfort victims, He prophetically touches identity. He shows sons who they are in Christ — overcomers — and what they’re invited to: purpose and co-laboring with Him. He teaches warfare: how to take accusations to the Courts of Heaven, how to hear and release decrees. And He unveils the Reformation plan — how to join the team bringing Heaven to Earth, how to set captives free from victimization, how to create and innovate new solutions to old problems from conversations in God’s Council.

That’s the whole posture shift in one phrase: volunteering for victories. Not conscripted. Not coerced. Not owed anything by anyone. Sons expect and even relish warfare — they’re the Davids and Deborahs, the kind who hear Father’s question, “Whom shall I send,” and answer before it’s finished: “Here am I, Lord — send me” (Isa 6:8). Victims submit to defeat and self-pity. Sons volunteer, blossom in the fight, and are matured in the process.

The Spirit backs this up before there’s even fruit to show for it. Hearts come alive when they engage in purpose and feel Father’s wind in their sails… sales. Hope rises the moment a son engages a prophetic purpose that’s alive and living, because sons can see in the Spirit what isn’t yet visible in the natural. They can see Heaven’s storehouse. They can participate in what Father is already doing rather than waiting to be rescued from their victimization script. Human endurance is a temporary band-aid — there’s joy set before us, if we ask Father to show us where He is leading.

Courage in this framework isn’t human tenacity; it’s the direct consequence of what a son has actually seen in the Council — the same Spirit that turned Joshua and Caleb into a minority report of faith while ten other spies spread a majority report of fear. That’s the real fork in the road: fear-based rumor-spreading versus Spirit-fed clarity in Living Words, complaining versus co-laboring, whining versus building.

Kingdom culture is contagious, and it’s built for exactly this: mighty men and women with a healthy hunger to hear Father’s voice, a natural tendency to lead by co-laboring rather than complaining, champions of good news who function as Solutionaries instead of victims. Not fearmongers. Volunteers who bring Heaven to Earth.

The invitation isn’t complicated, even if it costs something real: stop rehearsing what the enemy might do to you and start asking Father what He’s already doing — then raise your hand in the Council and bring that strategy to Earth.

*In a victim mentality, “heroes” are actually defined by the villain, not the other way around. The whole narrative orbits around identifying an oppressor to fear and resist — so even the movement’s celebrated figures are heroic in proportion to how hard they fight the feared enemy, not because of anything generative they’ve built. The emotional center of gravity stays on the villain, the enemy is worshipped. That’s why victim-mentality culture tends to produce louder villain-callouts than actual role models — fear of the oppressor is the engine, not admiration of an exemplar, or fruit. The glue for fellowship is hatred of a common enemy.

Sonship flips the orientation entirely: heroes are people worth emulating because of what they’ve demonstrated is possible — “greater works than these” (Jn 14:12), the great cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 11, Paul’s own “follow my example as I follow Christ” (1 Cor 11:1), or Hebrews 13:7’s charge to “consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.” The center of gravity moves from a feared villain to a beloved example (Jesus) — from opposition & hate to impartation & love.
