This week, our company had a safety stand-down, and all work was stopped because of some operational lapses in the nuclear industry… big no-no! I felt empathy for the management team trying to motivate 2,600 people to do better. The stand-down was justified, but the communication was all about procedural compliance. It missed an opportunity to talk about our purpose. People are motivated by purpose, not rules. They will maintain a high standard, but they must have a good reason—a why! Adding more paper, discipline, oversight, and compliance isn’t a good why, and it doesn’t inspire human hearts. The step change needed in human performance isn’t coming through the law; it’s coming through the sons all creation has been yearning for (Rom 8:19).

Leading Sons – There is a step change happening in business leadership and management. Leading sons is an entirely different animal than our traditions for leading a staff of serfs (those who believe someone else hears God’s purpose for them and tells them what to believe and what to do). When performance didn’t meet expectations, we would just apply more carrots and sticks to see which of our coercive tools garnered more compliance from our donkeys. Our operational focus has been on what to do (goals) and how to do it (procedures and quality). It all equates to getting our serfs to serve us… better! It’s honestly a mind-numbing, dehumanizing hamster wheel that keeps the serfs safe but robs them of their potential as sons.

God has prepared sons and millennials who aren’t motivated by fear and loss aversion compared to serfs. Carrots and sticks don’t work because they want purpose, not just a paycheck. They want Reformation, not just a raise. They want to contribute to a higher purpose in two ways:

  1. Sons want to understand thecorporate why so they can engage with something worthwhile. (Most managers are uninspiring serfs themselves and can’t articulate a credible )
  2. Sons want to understand their own why so they can leverage the synergism between your business and their calling.

Very simply, leadership does two things in response:

  1. Share yourprophetically correct business why so your staff can engage with it.
  2. Start paying attention to the calling people carry so you can leverage the synergism between their anointing and yours. We don’t just want what people can do; we want what God can do through them when they are in touch with their Kingdom purpose, doing what the Father is doing.

How? You may ask – We learn our identity, story, and purpose in the Council by hearing Father. Leadership is the art of using the same process to help others. We’ve used coaching as the term to help people inherit their sonship, but in the context of a business, in-house leadership is a better term. It’s the norm for how we treat people. We’re inviting them into Father’s purpose and vision and teaching them how to hear it themselves.

We’re giving sons permission to hear God for themselves. Serfs don’t hear from God. Managers don’t expect them to, and they themselves carry an expectation that others will tell them what to do. How do we gracefully set the captives free from serfdom?

#1).  Give sons permission to hear for themselves by going to the Council. Develop their seer gift in the process. Make room for their voice and their contribution as sons. Expect God to speak to them and work through them. When they get it wrong or hear it wrong, share the right.

#2).  Share the corporate why and encourage them to engage with it and add to it. Connect with hearts. Try being human, vulnerable, real – it’s fun!

#3).  Start with Why – Start putting the details of their work in the context of their why. Start with why, not just thewhat and how of their work assignments. Address your business why that they can share and then address their personal why that motivates them. You’re acknowledging their identity!

#4).  Let God do His Part – Allow Father to contribute to the process via the Council. Make it personal and practical! Leaders put the Kingdom first for a very good business reason – so Father can add all these things (Mt 6:33). Real leadership makes room in business for what only God can do.

The Leadership Secret – Business is the perfect opportunity to disciple sons to inherit what God has written on their hearts. We’ve got 40 hours a week to get the clarity and to put Father’s purpose to work on Earth. Your staff is imperfect, and they will make mistakes that cost you money. Welcome to reality! Jesus had the same problem, and here is how he improved the culture.

Jn 15:15 – I no longer call you servants,                                             (He eliminated the hierarchy)
because a servant does not know his master’s business.

  Instead, I have called you friends,                                (He invited them into family)
for everything that I learned from my Father

  I have made known to you.                                          (He was transparent)

Eliminate the hierarchy – Treat everyone like peers; communicate with them, listen.

Invite them in – Hire people you would want as friends, see their hearts first,
then invite them to own their part of the purpose and vision.

Be transparent – Share your why and establish a culture where they can share theirs.

The result – People will see you don’t just use them as serfs, but respect what they carry. You will help them discover the magnitude of the purpose God has invested in them; help them find opportunities to contribute and be the hero. When that happens, they will love you for it. It’s a dramatically different work culture; an Ecclesia where people share a Kingdom vision, collaborate to bring it to earth, and honor what others bring to the table.

When it doesn’t work – Some people won’t fit. It just means their path lies elsewhere, not that you or they have failed. To the degree that we help them articulate their and Father’s heart’s desires, we can help them find a better fit or release them to find it themselves. It’s true Jesus had one resignation himself! But it’s also true that the rest of his disciples were all willing to carry the mission and die for the cause.

When it works slowly – Not everyone is going to jump on ascension when you do. Yet leaders are still sons themselves who go to the Council so they know how to lead. Leaders are sons who ascend and bring Heaven to Earth in management even while the wheat and tares grow together. We’re leading people where they haven’t been before at the pace they choose. It’s a step change into Reformation.
