When we bring up the topic of knowing the purpose God wrote in your heart, I often hear, “I already know my purpose and I’m doing it.” Quite often that means my business is working, it’s making money, and I’m too busy to have this conversation. I’m busy making bread (money). What does turning “stones into bread” mean? I think it describes the business process:
1) Turning raw materials into something of value that blesses other people such that they are willing to pay for it.
2) It also has the implication of “something for nothing wealth generation” – getting rich on crypto isn’t fulfilling! It doesn’t create value in this life, or eternal value (storing treasures).
When Peter said “I’m going fishing” he was returning to his business or making bread; not “bad” just not complete. “Complete” is living by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Father. Word (logos) by its definition implies the purpose God wrote in our hearts as the motivation for what we do.
Matt 4:3-4 – “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word (logos) that comes from the mouth of God.'”
John 6:67-68 – So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” 68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words (rhema) of eternal life. NASU
Matt 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. NIV
Purpose and motive – Behind every action (such as storing treasure) is a motive/purpose (our treasured intentions). In the case of storing treasures on earth, our purpose is to protect ourselves and our future. Savings is wise, but the primary purpose of our lives cannot be self-preservation – how boring and introverted! We don’t really have anything to live for until we have a purpose we’re willing to die for. Actually, death is the easy way out. Daily living and giving our lives to a Kingdom purpose is harder, yet more fun when we hear confirmations from the mouth of our Father. Giving our lives for a cause bigger than ourselves is what make life worthwhile. Doing our purpose is what stores treasure in heaven. Business is both creating value and hearing God (in the council).
John 16:23-28 – In that day you will no longer ask (Question) me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask (declare) in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask (declare) in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” NIV
Define success – your business may be thriving, and your barns may be full. Is that enough? It all evaporates when we step into eternal life. It can occasionally evaporate well before then! Who are you if you are separated from your possessions and business? Real success is laying your head on the pillow at night knowing you accomplished your Father’s purpose; you did what He was doing that day and in that age. There is nothing more satisfying than hearing, “Well done!” at the end of your day. That sense of co-laboring with your Father in your life and business is something you can take into the next life. It is storing treasure. It will probably also create value and multiply wealth, but that’s the frosting on the cake. The real joy is in knowing you and Father are on the same page doing the same work. That is success! Authority of sons – Success is rooted in every word that proceeds from the Father; it feels wonderful. Bringing our Father’s agenda from heaven to earth is more than cooperation and co-laboring. It’s revelation that sticks, is always about my purpose; it always has an application. It’s never just head knowledge to share with others. “Ask” is no longer a question (we know what His purpose is). It is really a prophetic declaration that releases the power of God to do even greater works. It’s your job to establish your purpose in earth. The point is that when we know what the purpose is, we can unleash the power of God to make it happen. Sons live in a purpose bigger than themselves. They also live in power much bigger than themselves. Storing Treasure is… When I know my purpose, I am asking for myself, but I’m keenly aware that my Father shares that purpose and I’m asking for Him as well. Hearing His voice and doing our purpose is what stores treasure in Heaven. We are never just turning stones into bread, making money for ourselves. We are establishing His Kingdom on earth and paving the way for another reformation of nations. That’s the ‘purpose’ we’re talking about!
- Can you get your purpose it in writing?
- Can you connect your purpose dots to the purpose of your Business? Brand? Nation?
Bottom line – my purpose is much bigger than “me” – much more exciting, too!
