Eyes on the Prize

Giants in the land – About three plus weeks ago an acquaintance from work was diagnosed with colon cancer that spread to his other internal organs (lungs, liver, etc). Roger is a 41 year old Christian, married father of two beautiful girls (8 and 10). The doctors pronounced two years to live “if the chemotherapy worked.” What they didn’t say hurt even worse – those two years would be a nightmare of suffering. I caught up with him in the hospital on Easter Sunday with pneumonia and in pain. He had been to the Healing Rooms in our city and had received prayer and a healthy dose of Biblical outlook. Surprisingly, he seemed to have faith to be healed. For the next week I went to the hospital and prayed with him every day (along with dozens of other friends). He gained strength, his lungs cleared up, the colon began to work, and his blood chemistry came into order. The chemotherapy seems to be working, he’s lost no hair, and he’s not in pain. There have been enough victories that Roger has postured himself above the cancer and we seem to have it on the run.

Roger’s case is dramatic, but most of us have been faced with giants. Sometimes in health… or finances… or temptation. The enemy would like to defeat us and discourage us. Even God would like to see us clothed with authority to be more than conquerors. He likes to have His kids defeat giants through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Posture – Joshua and Caleb were just two of twelve spies that all agreed on the presence of giants. Ten chose to focus on the giants; two chose to focus on their ability to defeat giants and saw themselves as conquerors.

Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” Num 13:30 NIV

What I want you to notice is that Caleb said, “we can certainly do it.” I usually hear people trying to be spiritual with a caveat such as, “if God wills He will enable us”… usually offered up just before a defeat. I see three simple ingredients in Kings that are able to defeat giants.

1) They believe they can do it. Even if they don’t know how they are convinced an answer exists and set about finding it. They pray expecting an answer. Jesus surprised the religious camp of his day because he prayed as one having authority – because He did; so do you! “More religious” is often “less authority”

For he taught them as one having authority , and not as the scribes. Matt 7:29 KJV’

They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority. Luke 4:32 NIV

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” Luke 10:17 NIV

2) They are not vacillating about defining the will of God. They know God is in their camp and they expect to be not just conquerors but “more than conquerors.” They expect to win with some margin, not in overtime.

But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.  James 1:6-8 NIV

3) They don’t focus on the problem (giants, cancer, debt, etc.). They focus on the solution and what it will be like after the victory. It’s a different mindset based on the God of “plenty” instead of the “poverty” that may be in our history. When you’re staring at your giant it’s hard not to see the problem and imagine what defeat will be like. Instead, we need to see the solution and imagine the sweet taste of victory. We usually get what we “see.” That’s how faith works – for better or for worse.

What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted. Prov 10:24 NIV

For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.  Job 3:25 KJV

“We” have a very bright future – both theologically and practically. It’s up to us to shape this world so that future conforms to His plan. He’s blessing the nations through great people like you. It’s a time for optimism; a time to carry out a game plan to win. God is indeed “pleased with you.”

By this I know that You are pleased with me, Because my enemy does not shout in triumph over me. Ps 41:11 NASU

Life is an adventure. People are a blessing. God is amazing. We’re winning.
