Kings – Planting churches in the 9-5 Window
January 23, 2005 Hi

Church in the 9 – 5 Window

I’ve been a little surprised lately to find many Christians disillusioned with their church experience. One brother emailed me and referred to attempts to work through the church as futile, “like rearranging the deck chairs of the Titanic.” I even spoke with a pastor of a church that outwardly seemed large and healthy.  He spoke of financial problems and the general decline of his denomination.

I’m very optimistic about the future of the church for a several of reasons. One is that Christ is the head of the Church and he’s promised to make her a spotless bride. Second, Jesus promised to “build his Church” not bring her to failure. The Church has never know a period of greater growth world-wide than right now!

And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matt 16:18-19 NKJV

There is a restless sense among the saints as the Lord tweaks our definition of “church.” Here in the US we have emphasized the facilities, programs, services, the pulpit, the worship, the anointing, and the size of the congregation. A few percent of our churches are large and “successful” but the growth is transferring from smaller churches with fewer programs. Neither large nor small churches have equipped the saints for the work of ministry outside the 4 walls. Instead of equipping the saints so they can minister in their workplace Monday through Saturday, we pastors have been prone to emphasize the vision of the church and the need for people to support it. We’ve preached ourselves onto an island that doesn’t connect with: 1) the marketplace, 2) the vast majority of suburban America and 3) the Kings that will take “church” to 1 and 2.

Churches – That Graduate Kings

What I’m hearing is the great joy that comes to people realizing they are free to minister outside the church as Kings. Many are pioneers led by God’s Spirit. They haven’t been taught or sent except by God. They are compelled by the joy of reaching the lost and being used by God to be ministers… just like the early Church.

Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 With shrieks, evil spirits came out of many, and many paralytics and cripples were healed. 8 So there was great joy in that city. Acts 8:4-8

Listen to the heartbeat of what God is releasing among His people:

Dear John and Harold – I can’t tell you how much freedom I have received since reading “Releasing Kings” and attending the seminar in Spokane.  For years I have felt led to own my own business and that I have the anointing to make money but wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. It seemed to go against what we have been taught in the church.  I always thought that I needed to be in ministry within the confines of the church to be pleasing to God. I have started a new career (in my mid-fifties) and there is absolutely NO DOUBT that Real Estate is the niche for which I was created at this time of my life.  I not only have the opportunity to make some good money but in our Real Estate office we are allowed to have a prayer meeting each week and pray for each other and any transactions or people who come across our path in our daily job. I have also had the pleasure of experiencing some “divine appointments” with clients and it is just one more confirmation that I am right where God wants me. Thank you so very much for bringing this confirming and affirming message to the Body of Christ.  I am excited, encouraged and ready to “Go for it.”  Be Blessed my friends,

Linda Arenson, Real Estate Agent

You can read Linda’s interview and find out more about her (and Doug’s) visions for the Philippines.

Please don’t hear this newsletter as a cry to dismantle the church – we’re just adding a new wing in a way (and the timing) that pastors can get excited about. Marketplace ministry is God’s answer for evangelism, missions, city transformation, and revival – to use more familiar language. A few churches are turning the corner. Os Hillman did a case study of 5 churches that have emphasized the ministry of their people outside the church with promising results. Take a look at:

Churches making the Paradigm shift in equipping the 9-5 Window.

Progress – Kingly Bio’s are Up

We’ve completed the first round of interviews with Kings.  These are real people that have been blessed by God in the Market Place and have hearts for ministry.  Check it out at  If you have a success story, we’d like to post it by giving you a web page on our site.

Progress – A Teacher’s Guide

We’ve completed the first version of a study guide that targets those teaching the material in Releasing Kings.  It includes a page of notes on each chapter, all the graphics suitable to make overheads, and a PDF file of the book with the key points highlighted that includes marginal notes, comments, and questions.  This material is available for purchase on the teacher’s guide page of the web.

Friends Tell Friends

Harold and I have both been hesitant to “market” this book… sounds self-serving.  Here’s the “grassroots” reality.  God has given us a great tool to communicate a message that sets people free in an amazing, contagious, life-changing way.  If you haven’t read it – get it.  If you have read it – give it.

We’ve gotten a ton of positive feedback on the newsletter too… get it, give it.  Reloading Seniors was powerful.  Pass the link on.

PS: don’t forget to look at the free reports – show your pastor the article on marketplace ministry from the pastor’s perspective.  You can simply email him this link or print a copy to give him.
