2013-03-31 Dreams Have Roots and Fruits

We are being invited by God to define and pursue our dreams in this season. This is a Kingdom age, and giving yourself permission to look into the desires of your heart is simply the way that Jesus is expanding His Kingdom. Coaching is generally thought of as a process to facilitate your dream. It can include your passions, desires, talents, background, goals, heart boundaries, your team, time management, cash flow, relationships, processes, marketing, business plan, etc. Many people find it hard to get started because they have trouble investing in a dream that they can’t clearly define. Others who do have a dream are not sure they can trust it enough to take the leap and pursue it. Dreams have two characteristics that coaching doesn’t usually touch… root and fruits. Dreams have a beginning in something. If we know where they came from (roots), then we can get an idea of where they may lead (fruits). All dreams have consequences or results. When we look at the fruit of where we’ll end up, that can help us as well.

Roots from the heart – One paradox of becoming a King with a direction is that God will not do it for you. We all have to give ourselves permission to dream, and search the desires of our own hearts. God will not just hand you a dream for obedient implementation – contrary to our theological roots in servant mentality. God writes His desires on our hearts and delights in our initiative. Praying to make God show you your destiny will get you the dial tone.

Once we adopt the initiative to pursue a desire, the next road hazard is that it might lead to a dead end. Coaching often begins with “what do you want to do” and ends with “how.” The key to the Kingdom is that the desires of our heart overlap the desires of God’s heart. That’s the root we have to take a look at. The Kingdom leverage that enables us to live in spiritual and financial abundance is doing what the Father is doing. If we generate a mental desire instead of connecting with our hearts, it will eventually run out of gas. Finding a desire in our hearts that is also on God’s heart will produce fruit even if the path goes through trials and tests and tempts us to run out of gas… the difference is that one is assured and the other is doomed from the beginning. Healthy roots are the foundation of a dream that remains and produces Kingdom fruit.

How to discern health roots – How do I know if the dream in my heart has roots in God’s heart? In a word, “prophetically.” I encourage people to just speak their dream or desire, and we listen to the sound of it and the wisdom of it. The real thing resonates prophetically and practically using wisdom. The counterfeit might be projected as spiritual or religious, but it has a hollow sound. Once you hear both a few times, it’s easy to tell the difference. Anybody can do it. That’s one of the most valuable inputs that a coach can give… Does your dream touch your Kingdom purpose, or will it lead to nothing? We don’t make that call. We help you to make it yourself.

Mental discipline – Coaching does have real value. Having a plan and goals and making regular progress is simply being a good steward of your calling. God has a lot of negative things to say about slothful stewards, and good things to say about faithful stewards – He multiplies them with opportunities and finances and ministry. We really do have to manage the way we think, our identity, our feelings and our actions. The motivation and foundation for right thinking isn’t something we tamp into our subconscious. When our hearts have a good Kingdom reason for our dream, then the right attitudes and thinking bubble up more naturally. Our hearts simply want to know “why” we’re investing in this dream. The practical side of making a dream come true is work, but it’s a labor of love because we enjoy it and we get to see the Father’s miraculous hand in it. I like this article on the Top 10 Things Successful People Do to Reach Their Dreams.

Fruit that remains – All dreams go somewhere, some to great victories and others to dead ends. Let’s focus on dreams rooted in the Kingdom, and talk about their fruits and consequences and results. Everything Kingdom has three basic earmarks: righteousness, peace and joy. These dreams will draw you ever closer to the Lord. They are evidenced by the peace and satisfaction of doing something important that adds value and blessing to others. Lastly, pursuing the desires of your heart is fun. There is great joy and adventure in seeing your dreams come true. Even when the going gets hard, righteousness, peace and joy will be present. There is often a clear sense of hearing the Father say, “Well done.”

There is also a wisdom ingredient in Kingdom dreams. They lead to a place of abundance. One of the ingredients in the Kingdom is that we become self-sustaining and generous financially. Dreams without this component never multiply because they are maintained with huge infusions of energy and cash from others. Simply put, “Kingdom dreams have cash flow that can be measured.” That is the ingredient of wisdom that is often neglected in dreams. The wisdom of proverbs and wealth creation go hand in hand. It’s simply one of the fruits of the way God does business. It’s His nature to be overflowing with generosity. As Kings, we are very much like the King of Kings.

I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. 18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. 19 My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. 20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, 21 bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full. Prov 8:17-21 NIV

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work…. 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion… 2 Cor 9:8-11 NIV
